As both a researcher and an educator, I have three foundational priorities that I work toward: (1) providing opportunities and resources for all students to become successful, (2) building inclusive and equitable environments within the academy, and (3) using evidence-based research to inform my practice as an educator. I’ve had the pleasure of having many wonderful physics teachers and mentors throughout my academic career. Throughout my own experiences, I’ve come to realize that teaching and mentoring share a variety of characteristics; great teachers and mentors have respect for the individuals who are learning and have the growth mindset to reflect upon how they can better their teaching and mentoring strategies. As an educator within the academy, it is my duty to ensure that my students, both within my classroom and my own research laboratory, will have the content knowledge, the scientific and professional skills, and have robust opportunities to become successful scientists.
